Rugby in St. Benildus

Rugby in St. Benildus

(09 Feb 2018)

The rise of rugby is continuing at pace in St Benildus. Last year the school fielded a junior team. This has
grown exponentially to three teams (Senior, Junior & 1 st year) and close to 100 players this year. Success
breeds success and last year’s junior term loaded with Salmo juvenile players set the benchmark for this

This year that same group reached the Leinster Development Cup Semi Final at senior level, where they were unfortunate to miss out on a final place. At the time of writing the juniors, again loaded with DLSP players, are in the Leinster Development Final. Both of these sides still have the South Dublin Development Cup to look forward to where the juniors have a title to defend.

However, the most exciting development is the emergence of 35 first years playing rugby, some of whom have subsequently joined DLSP. They are currently training hard and looking forward to a tournament after midterm. It’s an exciting time to be a rugby player in St Benildus and with continued excellent support from the club through facilities and coaches who knows where this journey will take us. Undoubtedly both club and school are benefiting from the relationship and we look forward to see the fruits of the hard work. Anyone wishing to volunteer time to helping school teams would be warmly welcomed.
