A Winning Start for the First XV

A Winning Start for the First XV

(22 Sep 2019)

Salmo got their Leinster League campaign off to a winning start with a narrow 15-13 victory against newly-promoted Cill Dara at Kirwan Park this afternoon.

Captain Ian O'Connor got the home side on the scoreboard after just two minutes as he used all his footballing skills to kick ahead twice and his pace to win the race to touch down under considerable pressure. Ian Burke sent over a fine conversion from out near the righthand touchline to add the extras.

Things got even better when Michael Cooke went over for a second try on 12 minutes, the right wing again
proving a productive option for Salmo. The conversion drifted wide this time to leave the scoreboard reading 12-0.

Cill Dara showed no signs of being daunted by their first experience of 1B and took the game to Salmo for large parts of the first half, although they did blow a 7-pointer when they inexplicably dropped the ball in the Salmo in-goal area as they attempted to secure an easier conversion. A very kickable penalty would also go astray before the visitors finally put some points on the board with a penalty on the stroke of halftime.

The second half started with a bang as Cill Dara recorded their first try of the day; the conversion was missed to leave the score at 12-8 but within a couple of minutes Ian Burke knocked over a penalty to give Salmo a seven-point cushion.

On the hour, Cill Dara crossed again and it looked as if we were certain to be tied at 15-15 only for the conversion to slide left and leave Salmo with a 15-13 lead.

The last 20 minutes seemed to last forever as both sides continued to probe but neither could quite land the killer blow. A fine burst by Bjorn Aloander fed Matt Curran but as he dived for the line the ball was dislodged by a superb try-saving tackle. Michael Cooke would cause the visitors more trouble and another Salmo break down the right wing was stopped just yards from the Cill Dara line.

As the clock ticked on, the penalty count started to go against the home side and it was a very nervy last 10 minutes as we willed the referee to blow his whistle. When he finally did so, it was a hugely-relieved home crowd that were able to celebrate an opening day win.

A big thank you to everyone who came out to support the team today. It was great to see such a big crowd cheering the team on.
