Eight on the Spin for the U20s!

(19 Jan 2020)

The U20s made it 8 from 8 today with another hard-fought win on the road as they came away from Dr Hickey Park with a 4-try bonus point win against a dogged Greystones side.

Salmo shaded the early exchanges and opened the scoring on 8 mins when Mikey Holly knocked over a penalty, one of several that sustained pressure from the visitors in the Stones half had earned up to that point. Stephen Meagher went on a fine burst down the left wing a couple of minutes later and was very unfortunate that his effort was ruled out as "held up".

Good work from the pack on the 20 minute mark saw them win a scrum against the head and, a couple of phases and penalty advantages later, Holly powered over from the back of the scrum with Jake Finlay adding the extras to make it 0-10, the home side reduced to 14 men as the referee had lost patience with the penalty count by then.

Meagher went on another burst on the half hour, this one starting in the middle of the park and leaving numerous defenders flailing at thin air and finishing in the right hand corner to move Salmo out to a 0-15 lead. The home side pulled one back a couple of minutes later and we turned around 7-15 with the game still in the balance.

The first score of the second half didn't come until the 65th minute when Stones reduced the deficit to 10-15 but Salmo were quick to respond as first Michael Connolly went over in the right hand corner, then a subsequent penalty try seemingly seeing the visitors out of sight at 10-27.

A turnover at a Salmo lineout lead to Stones going up the field and crossing for their second converted try of the day, pulling it back to 17-27 and making the last 10 minutes seem rather longer than they might otherwise have done for the visiting support and a few more grey hairs appear amongst the coaching staff.

The dying moments were a flurry of penalties as both sides found themselves on the wrong side of the referee; Salmo had two shots at goal fall just short and it was the home side who registered the last score of the game, an unconverted try leaving us with a final score of 22-27 and another 5 match points on the board.

Next up is the visit of Bective Rangers who we will welcome to Kirwan Park on Sunday for a 2:30 kickoff. All support is vital and we would ask everyone to make every effort to come along and support the squad as they head into the final four games of the campaign!
