Leinster Rugby – Introduction to Rugby Programme – DLSP FC

(09 Feb 2018)

Nine schools means one busy DLR CCRO preparing the students for the Leinster Rugby Tag Blitz taking place in DLSP FC on Wednesday the 21st of February 2017.  On the day only six of the nine schools are able to attend but the others will be included in future Tag Blitz events.

The students are from schools in the area of DLSP FC and ranging from 4th to 6th class.  The schools on the programme are Our Lady’s NS (Girls & Boys), Holy Cross NS, Our Lady of the Wayside NS, St Olaf’s NS, St Mary’s NS, Kilternan COI NS, St Patrick’s NS Glencullen and Holy Trinity NS.  The focus of the programme is to introduce rugby into primary schools, to teach players a different way of playing rugby in a safe and fun environment.  The challenge for myself is to make sure everyone is included, giving the sport of rugby a try and enjoy the experience.

Children like to try new things and give themselves a challenge but also the sense of achievement is sometimes a bigger reward for them once they understand pass, catch while running straight (of course evading the defence) is all that rugby is about really.  Tag rugby allows children to master so many skills such as teamwork, handling skills, supporting each other while having fun.  A positive of tag rugby is allowing to have mixed teams made up of boys and girls playing together, the majority of schools attending next week will be made up of mixed teams.

The end goal for them is to be able to showcase what they have learned in a Tag Rugby Blitz playing against other schools.  The staff in Leinster Rugby on the day only focus on fair play, lots of smiles and keeping everyone active while making new friends.  Being in DLSP FC allows the students see the club house, meet with some of the coaches while getting a feel of what it would be like to train in the club and maybe one day play for DLSP FC.

The programme has been welcomed by all schools and everyone is excited for the blitz next week.  Support from the club on the day is very important in building lasting relationships with the schools and meeting future stars for DLSP FC and who knows Leinster or Ireland.
