It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of former Palmerston FC player and De La Salle Churchtown College past-pupil (class of 1964), Denis Hobson.
At this sad time, there have nonetheless been many happy memories of Denis shared by those who knew him during his time with Palmo and we are sharing these in fond memory of him.
Denis worked in banking for many years and, amongst the recollections shared this week by his many friends in the club's Wednesday Coffee Club, was the story of how he provided financial support to a fledgling Dublin band called U2 who subsequently expressed their gratitude with VIP passes for their later, much bigger, shows. Somewhat closer to home, many was the Palmerston club member who was grateful to Denis for the rapid arrangement of an overdraft facility on their account!
Denis is remembered as great entertainer in the clubhouse bar in Clonskeagh, "big into amateur dramatics on and off the field" in the words of one fond reminiscence and as "the only man I knew who could drink a pint standing on his head" in another. Later in life his talents in this sphere would further manifest in his involvement with the drama societies in Listowel and Abbeyfeale along with his loving wife Merce as an actor and co-director.
Also known for his sailing prowess, as well as his ability on the rugby field, Denis competed at both Cork Week and Calves Week. He was most recently in practise as a humanist celebrant in the Kerry area : "I went from arranging mortgages for couples to marrying them" as he described it himself.
A man of many parts and many friends, who will be much missed by all who knew him, may Denis rest in peace.
